Apply for a Contributory Aged Parent (subclass 864) visa

You have the option to pursue a permanent Contributory Aged Parent visa (subclass 864) through a two-step process. Initially, you can apply for a Contributory Aged Parent (Temporary) subclass 884 visa. This sequential approach enables you to distribute the expenses associated with the visas across multiple years.

How long you can stay

The subclass 884 visa is a temporary visa that allows you to reside in Australia for a period of 2 years, commencing from the date of visa grant.

Stay longer

Once your subclass 884 visa expires, you cannot extend or reapply for this visa. However, you may explore other visa options if you wish to remain in Australia beyond the validity period of your subclass 884 visa.

Include family

When applying for the visa, you can include members of your family unit. Ensure to provide details for all family members, regardless of whether they are migrating or not. Even if your partner is not applying for the visa with you, you should include their information in your application.

Please note that all family members included in the application must meet the health and character requirements set by the Australian authorities. Additionally, non-migrating family members might also need to meet these requirements.

Newborn child

If your child is born after you have submitted your visa application, you will need to inform the relevant authorities and follow the necessary procedures outlined by the immigration department. Additionally, please be aware that there may be an additional charge for including your newborn child in your visa application, as each family member included in the application incurs a separate fee.

Cost

The visa costs AUD33,895 and there is an additional charge for each family member included in the application. Payment is made in two installments: the first installment is due upon application submission, and the second installment is paid upon request. Additionally, there may be other costs associated with health checks, police certificates, and biometrics for each applicant.

To estimate the total cost of your visa, you can use the Visa Pricing Estimator tool. However, please note that this tool does not include the second installment or any other associated costs. You can find more detailed information about visa fees and charges on the relevant government website.

Apply from

When applying for this visa, you and any accompanying family members must be physically present in Australia, but not in immigration clearance. This means you should be within the country but not undergoing any immigration procedures at the time of application submission and when the decision is made on your application.

If you are currently in Australia on a temporary visa with a “no further stay” condition, your application for this visa will be considered invalid unless you have applied for a waiver of this condition. It’s important to ensure that you meet all the necessary requirements and conditions before submitting your application to avoid any complications.

Processing times

Due to the high demand for these visas, processing times for applications can be quite lengthy. To get an idea of the current processing times, you can use the visa processing time guide tool, which provides information on recently decided applications. However, please note that these times are just an estimate and may vary based on individual circumstances.

Your application may take longer to process if there are any errors or missing information in your application, or if additional information is required from you. It’s crucial to ensure that you fill out the application correctly and provide all the necessary documents to avoid delays.

Additionally, your application cannot be processed if you have not paid the correct visa application charge. If this occurs, you will be notified, and your application may be returned if necessary.

Please be aware that applications for this visa are subject to capping and queueing, which means that there may be limits on the number of visas granted each year. This can also impact processing times.

For more information on migration program outcomes and processing priorities, you can refer to the Reports on Migration Programs.

Assessment

Applications for this visa are typically assessed in two stages:

  • Eligibility Check: During this stage, we review your application to determine if you meet the basic eligibility criteria. If your application meets the requirements, it will be added to the processing queue. However, if it does not meet the criteria, it may be refused.
  • Assessment and Decision: Once your application is in the queue, we will continue to assess it based on processing priorities and available visa places. When a place becomes available, we will make a decision on your application. This decision will be communicated to you in writing. It’s important not to make arrangements to stay permanently in Australia until your visa is granted.

Please note that processing times can vary, and it’s essential to stay informed about the progress of your application. You can learn more about the Parent visa queue and processing priorities for additional information.

Consider another visa

Other Parent visas available include:

  1. Contributory Aged Parent visa (subclass 864): This is a permanent visa option, but it comes with higher costs compared to other visas in this category.

  2. Contributory Aged Parent (Temporary) visa (subclass 884), followed by the permanent Contributory Aged Parent visa (subclass 864): This pathway involves a two-step visa process. While it incurs higher costs than the subclass 804 visa, the expenses are spread across the two visas over a longer period.

  3. Sponsored Parent (Temporary) visa (subclass 870): This visa is temporary and allows parents to visit their children in Australia for up to three or five years at a time, with a cumulative maximum stay of 10 years.

You can explore all available visa options on our Visa list page for more information. Each visa has its own eligibility criteria, benefits, and requirements, so it’s essential to review them carefully before making a decision.
